The Secret

"What did I do Smith? Talk to me, don't shut me out. Smith! Smith! Smith!" Elena cried, banging on the door for a while before giving up. She quietly went to her room cowered under her duvet and wept.

"She doesn't deserve this, Smith," Smith told himself

"But, I have to work." He comforted himself with an excuse.

"Sooner or later you have to tell her, Smith," He thought, scratching his hair and groaning in agony.

“What will I do? Should I tell her? Will she still love me? Urghhhh. God, what do I do?” He struggled within himself, a thud sound called him back from his thoughts.

“Elena, is that you?” He slowly opened the door and rushed to check what fell only to meet his beloved wife beside the bed bleeding from her right hand.

“She tried to commit suicide. Oh, Smith, what have you done?” He muttered, carrying her to his car and drove to the hospital.

AT THE HOSPITAL

“Doctor! Doctor! Can anyone please attend to my wife?” He cries out, suddenly two nurses rushed in with a stretcher and wheeled Elena to the emergency room. The doctor came out after a few minutes of attending to his wife.

“Doc, what's going on? How is she?” Smith asked with fear written in his eyes.

“Thankfully, the cut was not so deep but she has post-traumatic stress and she will need to have a lot of rest.”

“Can I go in?” Smith asked quietly

“Sure, but no pressure. Let her rest.” The doctor replied.

“If you will excuse me, I have other patients to attend to.” The doctor left him while he slowly moved towards the door to see his wife looking fragile.

“I am sorry Elena, I did this to you. To us.” Smith wept. He quietly entered the room and sat beside his wife observing her beautiful face but was interrupted by a call.

“Mr. Smith, there is an emergency. The contract ought to be signed by the Davies Industries has been canceled.”

“What! Why?” Smith screamed in shock but was cautious not to wake Elena.

“I am on my way.” He replied, she held his hands as he tried to leave urging him to stay.

“Please stay with me. I need you.” She said, tears rolling down her eyes.

“I know but I have to secure the company for us. I will send someone to care for you.” He replied, patting her gently on the palm and left.

Elena's POV

He left. He doesn't care about me. All he cares for is his work. I picked up my phone to call my father. The phone rang twice and was picked up. Oh! I miss my father's voice.

“Dad!” I broke down in tears.

“Sweetheart, what's wrong?” He asked calmly as he always does since Mum died.

“I just miss you.” I lied.

He sighed at the other end knowing I had a lot to say but couldn't say it. I can not bring myself to tell Dad what I am going through. He will ask me to leave Smith and I don't want to. I love Smith.

“You can always come back home. Your room is still the same as always.” He said calmly.

“Thanks, Dad. Can you tell Mrs. Liam to come stay with me?” I asked.

He sighed again

“Okay. I will send her to you. Send your address.”

I sent the address. I had forgotten I was in a hospital.

“What! Elena, what are you doing at Chris Ford's hospital? Is something wrong?” He screamed in fear.

“No Dad, I came to visit a friend of mine who got injured.” I lied again. I don't like lying to my dad but I had to, I don't want him to see his daughter weak.

“Okay. Elena, my daughter, just know I love you just as I love your mum and you are always welcome home.” He replied calmly and ended the call.

I cried. I could not tell Dad, it could affect his health. I don't want to lose him like I lost mum. I will handle this on my own as I always have but first, I need a job. I lay quietly on the bed drafting work plans to help Smith. It seems the workload is too much for him.

Smith's POV

I hate to admit it, but I don't like leaving her alone but I guess I have no choice. When I make Brandson Industries stabilized I will pay more attention to her but for now, work it is.

I drove down to the office only to meet Mr. Davies waiting for me. I signaled Emma to check the situation on the ground.

“What’s going on?”

“Mr. Davies says he wants to speak with you alone.” She replied

“Alone?” I signed them and entered the office with confidence as usual. We exchanged pleasantries and moved on to the matter for the day.

“Mr. Smith, I see your works, they are pure and cool. These designs look real, I would not have considered it but thanks to the Secretary who opened my eyes to see the beauty lying underneath these designs.”

“Oh, thank you, Mr Davies”

I was shocked at his response. I thought he declined the offer, why was he now appreciating my secretary? What exactly is going on? We signed the contract and talked about other things. After he left, I called Emma into my office. She entered elegantly as always.

“What did you do?

“Nothing,” she replied nonchalantly. I could read from her gestures that there was something else.

“Emma, what is going on? You better start talking or you get fired.” I threatened.

“Okay. I just helped out a little.”

“How did you do that?”

"He wasn't ready to give us the contract so I made use of a few connections I had."

"connections? with who?"

"The Powell's"

I was shocked at her response. Emma Anderson is the daughter of Mr. Powell, the richest man in the city. Luck came to my doorstep and became my family.
