Chapter 1

My father, who had been missing for fourteen years, suddenly reappeared as a billionaire. He wanted me to return with him to inherit the family fortune.

However, I felt no joy in this reunion. Instead, I was filled with anxiety and panic.

You see, he had hidden my mother.

...

When I was eight years old, I noticed that my mother was different from other moms.

"Sherlyn, let's go play with building blocks!" My mom happily took my hand, heading towards the backyard.

"Mom, I haven't finished my homework yet," I declined her, then casually asked, "What's three times two?"

My mom pondered for a moment, as if struggling to find the answer.

"You wait here; I'll go ask my mom," my mom said, bouncing off to find my grandma.

When my mom came back, excitedly relaying the correct answer, I couldn't muster any happiness. Even as a young child, I had this nagging feeling that my mom shouldn't be unsure of something as simple as three times two.

Sure enough, the next day at school, I asked several classmates, and they all said that their moms definitely knew what three times two equaled. Not only that, their moms knew so much more.

But my mom seemed only capable of teaching me how to play with building blocks.

When I returned home from school that day, I saw my mom, for the first time in my memory, holding a math textbook. She saw me and happily said, "Sherlyn, Mom spent the whole day learning, and now I know that three times two is six. I can teach you from now on!"

"No need," I shook my head. Today, our teacher had taught us about division, and it had taken my mom an entire day to learn what three times two was. In our class, she'd be at the bottom of the list.

As I grew a little older, I began to realize that things were not as simple as they seemed with my mom.
