We had been together for four years, and I'd always known that Brian had an ex-girlfriend named Audrey.
Although he rarely mentioned her, I learned about her from his friends.
Audrey was his dream girl, pure and perfect.
They met in high school when Brian was not the dazzling Mr. Paige he was now, but just an orphan that everyone bullied and looked down upon.
During that darkest period of his life, Audrey was undoubtedly his only light.
She saved him from despair, then they got into the same university, where they worked hard and became the envy of everyone on campus as an outstanding couple.
Just as they were about to graduate and Brian planned to propose, Audrey inexplicably broke up with him and went abroad.
Everyone was astonished. One of his friends sighed, "If they hadn't broken up, Brian would probably be a father by now."
The bathroom door opened.
A man wearing a loose bathrobe walked out, water droplets falling from his hair as he moved.
"Jane, I'm hungry," he said softly.
He paused when he saw me holding his phone.
I looked up at him silently and then raised my hand to show him the screen.
Normally composed, he suddenly seemed uneasy.
"Jane, let me explain..."
I stared into his eyes, watching his mouth move before he furrowed his brow, as if remembering something, and returned to his initial calm and composed self.
"Don’t overthink it," he casually said.
"I've broken up with her, and we're getting married. What more do you want from me?"
His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a tone of condemnation and indescribable disappointment.
Suddenly, I felt like laughing. And I did, tears streaming down my face.
He watched me laugh, thinking that I had accepted his explanation. His furrowed brow relaxed as he walked over to me, ready to embrace me.
"It's all in the past now, Jane. It's just us in the days ahead," he said with a nonchalant expression on his face.
I wiped the tears off my face while laughing, and then pushed away the person beside me.
Looking up at the person I had loved for four years, I spoke in a calm tone,
"Let's break up, Brian."
