Chapter 1

"Hello! Are you even listening to me?"

I shake my head to try and come out of my own thoughts. Cassie is looking at me annoyed as she waits for me to answer.

"Sorry. I just have a lot on my mind right now."

She sighs as she focuses back on the group and begins speaking again. This allows me to escape back into my thoughts. I know I really should be paying attention. We're at war right now.

Ever since Cassie's 16th birthday things have only gotten worse. My mind couldn't focus on that though. I was worried about Mason. He was challenged as the Alpha and I worried about the upcoming battle.

Cassie understood but had to worry about her own pack and problems. Ever since her party she's been more aggressive almost matching even V's temper.

"You may go." She announced to the room and we all got up. "Except for you."

I groan as I plop back down into my seat. "Talk."

I stayed silent for a while and she got up. I knew she was going to get my thoughts out of me willingly or by force.

"I'm worried about Mason." I cross my arms and try to look anywhere but her. "Then go see him."

My jawdropped at what she said. I couldn't just up and leave. I have responsibilities here.

Cassie began to tap her fingers impatiently. "I need to know if you're going to go so I can tell Nick that we need him for a week."

She was serious. I couldn't believe she was going to let me leave like that. The only question left was if Mason would let me.

"I would but-" Cassie threw a pen at me. A damn pen. Is she out of her mind?

"Just go. He isn't going to put you out." I hated her for throwing a pen at me but thankful that she said that.

No one knows Mason as well as she does so I accept what she tells me about him.

With a nod of my head, I stand to my feet. "Okay. I'll go."

"Great. Now go away. I have work to do."

*****

Today had to be the most nerve-wracking day of my life. It was the day that I would see my daughter for the first time.

With everything that's been going on, I couldn't go out to Denver to be there for the birth but I sent for them as soon as the doctor said she could fly.

I had many regrets about hooking up with that human girl. Finding my mate made me ashamed of the choices that I had made. I was bringing in a child that wasn't hers.

She seemed to be okay with it but I wasn't okay with the burden I placed on her already.

"Alpha. Alexandra from the Night Stalker pack is here."

This couldn't be happening. What was she doing here? Cassie didn't say anything about a visit when we talked yesterday.

"Bring her here." Whatever it is I just need to get her out of here soon. I didn't want her to be here when Michelle came.

I paced back and forth waiting for them to hurry and bring Alexandra here. Michelle and the baby could be here at any moment.

"Alpha." My beta broke me off from my thoughts.

Without saying anything he looked to Alexandra and she came in.

She looked beautiful like always but there was a lot different about her. The dark circles under her eyes. Her cheeks were more hallow. Even her muscle definition seemed to be fading.

"What's wrong?" I ask looking her over to see all the changes.

She didn't answer so I looked back at her face to see it turned a faint pink color as she looked anywhere but at me. "Alexandra?"

She slowly turned her gaze to me and I waited to see if I would get a question to my answer.

"Nothing is wrong."

I didn't believe her for a second. "Then why have you lost weight, it also looks like you haven't been sleeping which explains why your training has been hurting."

She looked at me completely dumbfounded and I remembered I was short on time. "Look I'm kind of pinched for time so if you could tell me what is going on it would really help."

Alexandra opened her mouth to say something when my beta came back into the room.

"Alpha."

"What now?!" I yelled annoyed that I almost got her to talk. "Michelle is here."

Just great. I run my hand over my face in annoyance. "Well bring them in."

I start pacing again. The worry of seeing my daughter for the first time gaining momentum in my mind.

"Who's Michelle?" Now I was worried for a whole different reason. I haven't told Alexandra yet and now doesn't seem like the time.

Not really having a solution I mindlink my beta. "Blaine."

"Yes, Alpha."

"Can you get a room ready for Alexandra?"

"Yes, Alpha."

"Take her to her room as soon as you get back here."

There was silence but I'm sure he was going to do it without saying yes.

"Why aren't you answering me?" I could tell she was annoyed. "Am I interrupting something?"

I turn towards Michelle and give Blaine a look.

He quickly walks over to Alexandra and she looks like she is going to flip a gasket. It will be great to explain this later.

*****

Who the hell was that chick and why did he make me leave? I was lying on the bed looking at my phone.

I wanted to call Cassie but I didn't want to annoy her but I was also feeling very lonely at the moment.

Caving I dial Cassie and wait for her to pick up. "You literally just left. Why are you calling me already?"

I opened my mouth to say something, anything, but nothing came. I literally choked up and started to cry.

"Oh my God Alexandra what's wrong? Do I have to come there?!" Cassie asked partially panicked.

I tried to regain my composure to tell her that I was fine but I just couldn't.

There was some commotion on her end before I heard a very low and disgruntled voice on the other end. "Tell Mason I'm coming to see him." V hung up and I was even more afraid.

Without a thought, I jumped up and ran out of the room right into one of his pack members.

"Sorry." I quickly yell over my shoulder as I continue to run down the hallway. I stopped when I came to a fork. I had no idea which way to go and I didn't have enough time to make mistakes.

Realizing that I'm wasting time by contemplating I just run down the right hallway. When in doubt go to the right, or I think that's what they say.

While I'm running I try to catch Mason's scent but I can't. I totally went the wrong way.

Frustrated I turn around and head back down the way I just came to try and go down the other hallway.

I was stopped by the wolf who took me to the room in the first place.

"Where are you going?" He questioned me as he blocks off my path to the other hallway.

I heard the bang before the wolf took off down the hallway I was trying to go. There was no way V was here already. He's fast but it is physically impossible for even Cassie to make the trip that fast.

Quickly I follow after the wolf and stop when I see Mason and Michelle standing face to face.

"What are you doing here?"

"Trying to warn you," I interjected myself causing Mason to face me.

He couldn't say anything before Michelle spoke. "We need to talk." She stated flatly before turning her gaze to me. "Alone."

I looked confused as to whether or not I should leave. When his gaze didn't shift in my direction I panicked more about being in this situation. "I'm busy right now," Mason stated and I didn't know if he was saying that to me or her.

Michelle seemed to think he was talking to her because she got really red in the face. "So she's the reason you haven't called!"

"No. I didn't call because I didn't want to."

Oh crap. What did I walk in on? I just wanted to tell him that V was coming to make an unannounced visit for an undisclosed reason and I get caught in the middle of whatever this is.

The baby in Michelle's arms began to cry and it instantly eased the tension in the room.

"Take them to a room," Mason told the wolf who tried to stop me before he walked to his desk to sit down.

I slowly followed after and decided to stand next to the chair on the other side instead of sitting. I wrap my arm around the top of the wooden chair and lean into it looking towards Mason.

"What do I need a warning about?" He asked with a huff.

I could tell he was stressed about everything that was happening with that girl and I had nothing but more stress to give to him. "V is on his way here."

Mason's eyes quickly snapped up to look at me. No one liked V coming to visit them, especially unannounced.

"Who was that girl?" I find myself asking involuntarily.

Mason freezes and I worry that I hit a nerve with my question. Was he even going to answer me?

"It's a very long story that I don't want to get into right now but I will tell you, in time."

I felt a little better since he said he will tell me.

"Why is V coming? Why are you here? Cassie didn't say anything about you coming yesterday."

I should have known that this would happen. How do I tell him that I came just to be around him, with him, without really saying that?

Not to mention I really don't know why V is coming. I doubt it's because I called Cassie.

"I don't know why he's coming. I called Cassie and he took the phone and told me to tell you that he was coming."

Mason went deep into thought as he furrowed his brow in an attempt to think of something. "So you came just to tell me that?"

No. That's not why I came. "No. He told me this when your beta put me in the room."

"Blaine." I looked to Mason confused. "His name is Blaine."

I nodded realizing that he was telling me his betas name.

"Then why did you come." He really wasn't going to let that go.

*****

She's avoiding telling me what it is that she is doing here. I know she doesn't want to tell me but it's eating at me to know.

She keeps huffing and playing with her hands so she must be nervous. That I don't understand. What is there to be nervous about?

"Cassie said I could come. She would get Nick to cover my duties for a couple of weeks."

I was going to ask her again why it is that she came but I milled over her last sentence. She was going to stay with me for a couple of weeks.

I will admit that I was a little excited about the idea because I like having Alexandra around. I do feel something for her, I'm just not convinced that it's love. I also don't need her here with me for weeks while Michelle is here either.

I ponder what to say or even what to do now and I have nothing, absolutely nothing.

"Alpha." Blaine's voice rings through the deadly silent room.

I nod. Still trying to think of what I'm going to do.

"Michelle insists that she see you now." Michelle had to be my worst mistake. What I saw in that girl I will never know.

Turning to Blaine a thought crossed my mind. Maybe I should let her come here and tell Alexandra what was going on.

It could scare her away since I had extra baggage.

"Bring her here." Blaine nodded and left out of the room. "Do you want me to leave?"

Alexandra stood further than she did a few moments ago like she was inching for the door.

"No. Time to tell you who Michelle is. When do you think V will get here?"

"Probably in 3 or 4 hours if he's driving."

I nod thinking of how I'm going to handle that situation. It will have to wait. One thing at a time.

There was a knock before Michelle came in with the baby still in her arms.

"This wasn't apart of the deal. You said you wanted to meet her. Not lock us up in a room while your girlfriend is here." Alexandra blushed as she looked at her feet.

I know she was uncomfortable and Michelle calling her my girlfriend probably made it worse.

I stand to my feet crossing my arms as I walk around my desk to stand on the same side as them. "Alexandra this is Michelle and she's holding my daughter."
