Chapter 1
I went back to the Ellison family’s house for a weekend break. My parents divorced when I was in high school, and two years later, my father remarried, bringing a stepsister into the family who was five years younger than me. During dinner today, she suddenly announced her engagement.
She was to be engaged to Eric, the only son of the Oliver family.
The engagement was set for next week at the most expensive six-star hotel on Briard Street.
I had heard from my father on a call recently. He mentioned that Rose, my stepsister who took our father's surname shortly after his remarriage, had started dating a man a few years her senior.
Her boyfriend came from a wealthy and influential family, was exceptionally good to Rose, and provided for her every need, driving her around daily.
"Really? I remember that hotel being very expensive. That means the engagement will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars!"
"Mom, Eric is the sole heir to the Oliver Group. He wouldn't mind the expense. He doesn't want me to feel slighted and wants to give me a grand ceremony."
"I see, Eric is really thoughtful. Then, what should we prepare?"
"There's no need, Mom. Eric had prepared everything. I've sent out invitations to all the relatives. All you need to do is be there."
"That's wonderful!"
"By the way, there will be many guests at the engagement party. Eric mentioned that to avoid freeloaders, each invitation is for one person only. Make sure you remind our relatives to bring their invitations along."
Rose and my stepmother discussed the details of the engagement lively.
My father, not much of a talker, sat quietly on the side, looking content.
I pondered over Rose's words.
All the relatives had been sent invitations, but I hadn't received mine.
“Rose, what about mine? I haven't received an invitation. Am I not your family?”
