Chapter 1
"Michelle, don't overthink it. We were just playing Truth or Dare."
After I entered the private room, I noticed Colin and Virginia's arms were still around each other. Seeing my displeased expression, Virginia smiled faintly, distanced herself from him, and began to explain with grace.
Her composure was unshaken, as if drinking from the same cup with someone else's boyfriend was a trivial matter.
Her light and breezy explanation made it seem as if any upset on my part would be due to my own immaturity.
I looked around, capturing everyone's expressions, and after a moment of thought, I decided to join them.
"It's just Truth or Dare. I understand."
I walked over to the table, poured myself a drink, and downed it in one go before I said, "The more the merrier, right? Hope you don't mind me joining."
"Of course not. Welcome aboard."
Colin's childhood friend Stephen was there too. Perhaps to avoid an awkward silence, he jovially topped up my drink and pulled me next to Colin.
"Why are you here?" Colin asked in a low, somewhat irritated voice as I approached.
"Just joining the fun," I replied with a smile and clinked glasses with him. I didn't drink, instead just holding the glass, and pointedly asked him, "What's the matter? You haven't done anything wrong to me, have you? Feeling guilty?"
Colin drank his drink expressionlessly and remained silent.
The game resumed quickly, perhaps more subdued due to my presence.
When the spinner pointed to Virginia, I asked her before anyone else could, "Truth or Dare?"
Virginia paused, her gaze flitting between Colin and me, finally meeting my eyes.
She smirked provocatively and replied, "Dare."
"Brave choice." I gave her a thumbs up. "Then you and Stephen do a link-arm-drink thing."
"What?" Caught off-guard, Stephen glanced at Colin instinctively.
"Why do you look at him?" I questioned with a laugh.
Colin darkened and warned me, "Michelle, don't go too far."
"Is it really too much? We are just playing ‘Truth or Dare’." I feigned surprise, then turned to Stephen, asking, "Stephen, you don't have a girlfriend, right?"
The atmosphere in the room was tense and awkward. Stephen, flustered, touched the back of his head. "No, not yet."
"That's good." I poured a drink for him and one for Virginia. "Drinking with someone who has a girlfriend is no big deal, so it shouldn't matter with someone who doesn't, right, Virginia?"
Before Virginia could take her glass, Colin grabbed it.
He slammed the cup down on the table, his expression dark. "Michelle, there’s a limit to making trouble."
With that, he took Virginia by the wrist with a protective gesture and led her straight out of the room.
