Chapter 03

Looking back, I suppose Oliver and I were never really from the same world from the start.

After we started dating, I secretly passed many of my own clients over to Oliver.

At first, he was quite grateful for this, as it not only helped establish his reputation in our circle but also significantly boosted his income.

Seeing his salary increase, I was quite pleased and even suggested we go out to a restaurant to celebrate.

However, when Oliver heard this, he hesitated for a moment, then spoke to me in a gently persuasive tone.

"Samantha, our financial situation has just started to improve. It's better to use money wisely right now, especially since there will be many expenses if we decide to get married in the future."

I was touched by his sincere consideration for our future, and so later he took me to the supermarket to buy some ingredients, and we had dinner at home.

I thought by doing so, our lives would get better.

But what I hadn't anticipated was that after a time or two, Oliver began to get accustomed to taking clients from me.

Even worse, he secretly DMed my clients on WhatsApp behind my back, attempting to poach them from me.

I had been naive, giving him those clients without much thought, never expecting anything in return.

But I could never have guessed he would repay me in such a way!

Little did he know, those clients were friends from my circle.

When these friends realized Oliver's intentions, they immediately told me.

Seeing my disbelief, they even showed me the chat records between Oliver and themselves.

Even then, I chose to trust him. When I confronted him, I clearly remember the flash of panic in his eyes before he quickly composed himself, took my hand, and said earnestly,

"Samantha, I don't want you to work so hard. Do you understand? I'm doing all this out of concern for you, and it breaks my heart that you don't see the effort I'm putting in for us."

As he spoke, tears welled up in his eyes, giving him a sorrowful look.

Seeing me lost in these memories, Phil, sitting on the sofa, blew out a puff of smoke.

The smoke nearly made me burst into tears right there.

If it weren't for the fact that he was a close friend of my brother, I would never have associated with someone like him in my life.

I glared at him fiercely.

He blatantly ignored my hostile gaze, stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, and said with a sly look,

"You really have poor taste in men, picking someone who just freeloads off women."

His mocking smile fueled my anger.

"He is not! Just wait and see. I'll make him prove his worth to you!"

Phil raised his eyebrows, looking intrigued.

"Is that so? I'll look forward to it."

Little did I know, his words would turn out to be prophetic.
