In the hospital, Chloe felt her stomach twisting and grabbed the arm of a nearby nurse.
"Miss, are you okay?" The nurse appeared worried.
Chloe waved her hand and, as if fleeing, rushed out of the hospital.
For the first time, she had seen Mortimer with another woman so blatantly, and Chloe had no idea how to react. Her first thought was to get out of there.
Mortimer, as if sensing something, turned to look but only saw a retreating figure.
He abruptly stood up and told his secretary, "Give me your car keys." After a moment, he changed his mind, saying, "Never mind, you wait here; I'll cover all the medical expenses for that person inside."
When he returned home, Mortimer opened the door to find Chloe sitting pale-faced in the hallway. She heard his entrance, and her empty eyes lacked any vitality.
"Chloe," Mortimer opened his mouth but didn't know how to continue.
Chloe pushed him away and with a quivering voice, said, "Why did you let me see that? You knew the hospital would call me, you knew—!"
Mortimer couldn't remember how long it had been since he had seen Chloe like this. He looked at the red-nosed woman and suddenly felt a long-lost sense of guilt. He gently held her face with his large hand and whispered, "Chloe, don't be angry."
In his eyes was genuine panic.
Chloe's heart softened at that moment.
At that moment, Mortimer's phone lit up, and he looked at it, his face changing instantly.
Chloe could see the nervousness and anger in his expression. She couldn't help but think of the woman she had encountered at the hospital and felt a sense of foreboding.
"I have something to deal with; I'll explain later," Mortimer said, turning and hurriedly leaving.
Chloe quickly put on a heavy down jacket and followed him. She watched him get into his car and drive off, and she hailed a taxi to follow him.
She never expected that Mortimer would return to the hospital to find that woman.
He stood there, saying something, while the woman protected her flat abdomen with her hands.
Chloe's icy gaze swept over the two of them, and she happened to encounter her attending physician, Osmond. She pulled him aside and asked directly, "I want to have a child. Is it possible?"
"Miss Ingram, given your current condition, it's not advisable for you to become pregnant," Osmond furrowed his brow, his tone heavy.
Chloe's emotions began to intensify. "I must get pregnant! If you can't do it, I'll find someone else!"
Osmond glanced around, and his eyes had a rare sharpness to them. "Miss Ingram, you are free to choose someone else, but I advise you that you only have one life."
Chloe's eyes reddened, and she shouted, "You don't understand!" Then she turned and ran out of the hospital.
Watching the two of them not far away, Chloe slumped against the wall, forced to suppress her sadness, but her teary eyes were unstoppable.
Mortimer, after nine years, why can't we make it work?
She took out her phone, her freezing fingers trembling as she sent a message.
Over there, Mortimer watched his weeping secretary and coldly said, "Vivian, get rid of the child."
Mortimer was well aware of the rumors outside. A successful man of his age who still didn't have a child was often assumed to have a physical issue. But he understood that aside from Chloe, there was only one true mistress in his life. So, except for Chloe, no one else was allowed to bear his child.
Vivian stared at him with wide eyes, unable to believe that she had come to this point, and this man could be so ruthless.
She glanced at the corner not far away, her entire body trembling with anger.
Mortimer paid no attention to Vivian's emotions. He lowered his head, took out his phone, and said, "I'll schedule the appointment for you…"
But as he said that, he abruptly stopped and stared at the message on his phone. His pupils contracted. There were just seven simple words: "Mortimer, let's get a divorce, okay?"
