Prologue

Italio's POV

Moonville, early 1901

The end came sooner than expected. This town wasn't enough for two hybrid families, they said. We knew we couldn't win them. We were outnumbered. Disbelief had clouded my mind almost making me doubt my existence. So this was the end?

"Italio," Master Edgar said. "This was bound to happen."

Edgar Light was the alpha supreme of the lightning hybrid family. The family of hybrids that were blessed with speed almost matching that of vampires. At seven feet tall, his wide shoulders and broad arms were enough to make anyone shake in mind wrecking fear. His ocean blue eyes glowed in the dark. He was dressed in a long overcoat with fur lapels.

Long black hair fell over his shoulders and full beards covered the nape of his wide neck. His big hands knocked on the door before us, his ring glinting as the sultry bulb above hit it. Footsteps approached and the door swung open.

My master's lover stood before us, her lean fingers on the door frame. She had jet black hair that was left to cascade down her back. With long eyelashes, a slim waist, wide hips, a slim neck and green eyes, it was no wonder she caught the attention of my master. A cool breeze ran through the entrance, her blue kirtle dancing in the air.

"Are you here to take him?" She asked, fixing her gaze on the wooden floor and crossing her arms.

"Yes." Master heaved a huge sigh. "I'm sorry, Catherine."

She pursed her dry lips and locked tears brimming eyes with him. "Did it have to be this way, Edgar?"

He shut his eyes closed. "We can't change fate."

He looked calm. But deep down he cursed himself for bringing Miss Catherine into his messy world.

"Those bastard Bloodfires." She balled her hands into fists, tears dripping to the floor. "Are we sticking to the plan?"

"Yes." His gruff voice was a bit hesitant.

He knew he didn't like this choice. But it was the only one that could keep the child safe.

"Alright." She wiped her tears and sniffed.

Her lower eyelids had reddened. She was taking this news quite well. I was expecting her to be rolling on the floor and crying her pain out. But she was unshaken and stood firm. She was a strong woman.

"Eren, Papa is here!" She yelled.

"Papa!" A tiny voice echoed inside the house and fast-paced footsteps came after.

A little boy toddled out of the house. He had short black hair and his electric blue eyes were similar to his father's. His thin pink lips had a smudge of chocolate on them, spreading to his chin. He showed his dad his chocolate-covered fingers and smiled.

Master Edgar knelt on one knee and covered the child's entire top head with his huge hand. "Hello, soldier." He grinned as Eren smeared chocolate on his hand. "You really love making a mess, don't you?"

Eren laughed, his eyes gleaming with joy. But this job wasn't going to last. Chaos was knocking on our door. Every pity I had left was reserved for this child. His life was about to change.

I brought out a piece of white handkerchief and gave it to my Master. He grabbed it and cleaned the lad's mouth. Standing, he locked eyes with Catherine. She had an expressionless face. She was drowning in uncertainty. She wasn't sure to leave her child in the hands of someone like me.

"Are you sure Italio should be the one doing this?" She asked and blew her nose with the handkerchief she took from Master Edgar. "You know what he is."

"I trust Italio with my life. He has kept our secret ever since. I can trust him with my son." He side glanced at me. "Besides, he hasn't died yet. So those powers haven't activated."

I knelt with one leg and held a fist to my chest. "If they were to ever be activated, I promise you..." I flickered my gaze up to her. "I won't hurt him. I've already taken measures to ensure it won't happen."

Eren toddled to me with spread arms. He hugged me and relief ran through me. It was as if he was telling me he trusted me. I stood and held his tiny hand.

Catherine sniffed. "What about your wife and children?"

"They're in the Light Manor holding up the defence." Master Edgar removed his ring and forced it into my hand. "Give this to Eren when he's matured enough to wield the power it brings."

I nodded my head. "Yes, Master."

The fact he gave me this ring meant he had already decided his fate. I also had to accept this was the end. Some things weren't meant to last. But from today, I swore to protect this child with my life.

"Master..."

"Yes." His knuckles paled. "I can smell them. Their filthy smoky scent." He smiled at Eren. "Go with Mr Italio to the park, I'll meet you there."

Eren nodded. "Okay, papa."

"Italio." Catherine cleared her throat. "Take care of my son."

"You can leave that to me, ma'am." I placed the child on my back.

Looking at his parents for one last time, I took off.
