Adonis
“I, Charlotte Day, reject Adonis Rios as my mate.”
It took me a few seconds to register, then I realized that Charlotte had actually rejected me. I was immediately filled with anger, but when I saw her fall to the floor with her mouth full of blood, all that anger vanished into dust and I was instantly filled with worry.
When I ran to her, it was already too late because she had fainted.
I held her fragile body, luckily I could hear her heart beating, but her pulse was weak.
‘Isn’t what you wanted.’ Chosen, my wolf said.
You know very well it’s not.
‘Deny it all you want, but you betrayed our mate Adonis. You were supposed to stand by her when the whole world turned away, instead you sided with her attackers and eventually forced her to reject us. Really, you don’t deserve her.’
My tongue was in a twist, although I wouldn’t say he was entirely right. I don’t think Charlotte is innocent. I’ve known this girl since we were kids and she always wanted to make my life hell just because her best friend had a crush on me. I know very well that she is the jealous type.
‘If she had been jealous, she would have hurt Kiana instead of tarnishing her own reputation.’
There’s a grain of truth in his words, but I don’t have time for that at the moment.
With her body in my arms, I got up and ran to the doctor’s office.
“I don’t think she would make it,” said Dr. Zen as he shook his head.
I grabbed him by the collar, “What do you mean she won’t make it?” I growled.
“Look,” he adjusted his glasses, “this is out of my control. She was already weak before, she must have known that she would not survive.”
I released my grip on him. It was all my fault. If I hadn’t been so harsh she wouldn’t have resorted to this, maybe I should have listened to her but it was too late now. Maybe I’ll never hear her speak again.
“I’m sorry, man.” Zen’s hand slid to my slumped shoulders.
The door opened and Kiana walked in, she turned her gaze to Charlotte’s unconscious body on the bed and in a split second I saw her lips curl into a smile. It was so short it felt like my eyes were playing tricks on me.
“Charlotte.” She screamed and ran towards her in tears. For some reason it seemed like an act, but I ignored it, maybe I was just paranoid.
When she finished crying, she stood up and looked at me. “What happened?”
I avoided her gaze. “She rejected me,” I said bitterly. I expected her to ask questions about how this had happened, but she didn’t say anything.
Turning to Zen, “Will she make it?” she asked.
Zen lowered his head. “Looks like she won’t. She can barely stand it now, I’m afraid she won’t last long.”
Kiana fell to her knees and burst into tears again and I found it annoying, she sounded like a broken record, fake and insincere. She stood up, wiped away her tears, and wrapped her arms around mine.
“Let’s go.”
I wanted to stay with Charlotte longer, but she didn’t wait for my answer and suddenly began to pull me out of the room. I took one last look at Charlotte and left the room with Kiana.
A few days passed and Charlotte was still unconscious on the bed. This worried and relieved me at the same time. Hope was not lost, there was still a small chance that she would wake up, but I wondered if she would want to talk to me. Our bond was already broken, I wonder if she’d stay or leave. Somehow, I knew the answer to that question. I immersed myself in work to escape the guilt that was gnawing at me inside. I couldn’t help but think about Kiana’s behavior that day. What if I had been wrong all along and Charlotte told the truth that she really was innocent, I would hate myself then.
‘Are you sure you already don’t?’ Said Chosen.
Since Charlotte’s rejection, he had taken it upon himself to make my life hell. I sighed and flipped through the paper in my hand, trying to understand its contents.
Not now Chosen.
Suddenly the door opened and I looked up to see Kiana angry.
As if Chosen’s rebellion wasn’t enough, Kiana also gave me no peace. I almost regret marrying her, I wouldn’t have done it without my father. Marrying Kiana was the only way to give me the alpha title, so I had no choice. Although I’m starting to wonder if it was worth it.
“I haven’t seen you in days, Adonis, are you really that busy with work or are you just avoiding me?”
Is it not clear? To me this marriage was nothing more than a business transaction.
“I’ve been busy with work.” I lied.
“You’ve been like this ever since Charlotte went into a coma. Tell me are you in love with her? Even after what she’s done.”
I opened my mouth to yell at her when Zen’s voice stopped me.
“Alpha.” His voice filled my head, I could hear the panic in his tone.
“What’s up?” I asked, trying to remain calm. I’m sure it had something to do with Charlotte.
“I don’t know how to explain it to you, you have to come and see for yourself.”
I immediately tossed the paper aside and stood up, ignoring Kiana as I walked out of the office. When I got to the room, the bed was empty.
“Where is Charlotte?” I turned to the doctor.
He took a deep breath. “I don’t know, when I dropped by this morning to run some checks, I found out that she was gone.”
“What do you mean gone?” I felt my blood rise.
He handed me a tablet, “I don’t know how this is possible, but the CCTV captured her leaving on her own.”
