Alethea's POV
The morning light filtered through my window, casting an amber glow that did little to soothe the unease curling through my chest.
Last night’s events felt like a fever dream, yet the reality of the crescent mark on my arm—and Ryker’s cryptic warnings—left no room for doubt.
And now, I was supposed to go about my day as though everything was normal, as though I hadn’t just been thrust into a world that shouldn’t even exist.
A sharp knock at my door jolted me from my thoughts. I knew who it was before I even answered, that familiar, quiet confidence bleeding through the wood.
“Ryker,” I said as I opened the door, keeping my voice flat, wary. “What are you doing here?”
He looked at me, his expression unreadable. "We need to talk. Preferably somewhere safe.”
My mouth twisted into a thin line. "Safe? Last I checked, no place in this town feels particularly ‘safe’ anymore.”
“Fair enough,” he replied, barely a hint of a smile in his eyes. “But you should know, there's a new threat in Silverwood. One that’s even more complicated than you might imagine.”
I blinked, my mind immediately flashing to the shadowed figure from last night. “More complicated than whatever tried to kill me in my own room?”
“That was only the beginning.” He stepped into my space, closing the door quietly behind him. His presence filled the room, making the walls feel closer, more stifling.
“What exactly is going on, Ryker?” I asked, my voice lower now, but steady. “You keep feeding me bits and pieces, but it’s not enough. I want the full story, every detail you’ve been holding back. And I want it now.”
He glanced away, his jaw tight, as though weighing the risk of what he was about to say. “Alethea… there are other alphas who know about you. And last night’s visitor wasn’t just a warning. It was a message. Someone powerful wants you to be a part of our world, whether you agree or not.”
"Someone like you?” My voice was edged with suspicion. I’d been skirting around this for too long, and it was time for him to lay his cards on the table.
Before he could respond, a commotion erupted outside. We both turned toward the window, my heartbeat spiking as I heard voices rising from the street. I looked at Ryker, his eyes already narrowed, a predatory tension in his posture.
“Stay here,” he ordered, moving toward the door.
“Not a chance,” I replied, my own curiosity overriding his command. If I was going to be tangled in this world, I wasn’t going to sit on the sidelines.
I followed him outside, the cool morning air biting my skin as I spotted the source of the commotion. Standing in the middle of the street was a tall, imposing figure—a man with dark hair, sharp features, and an aura that seemed to ripple with controlled aggression. The way people parted around him was almost instinctual, as if sensing the weight of his power.
Ryker tensed beside me, his expression turning cold as ice. “Thane Lupin,” he muttered, voice laced with disdain.
“Who is he?” I whispered.
“He’s another Alpha,” Ryker replied, his gaze never leaving the man. “A rival. And if he’s here, it’s because he wants something—or someone.”
Thane’s gaze swept over the crowd before landing on me, his eyes gleaming with a calculated intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. He gave a slow, knowing smile and stepped toward us.
“Ryker,” Thane greeted, his voice as smooth as polished glass. “You didn’t tell me you had such… interesting company in Silverwood.”
“I don’t have to tell you anything,” Ryker replied, his voice a low growl. I could feel the tension radiating off him, like a tightly coiled spring about to snap.
Thane’s gaze shifted back to me, his smile widening. “Alethea Moonflower, isn’t it? Word travels fast when there’s a woman with… unique talents in our midst.” His eyes flicked to my arm, as though he knew exactly where my mark lay hidden.
I stiffened, my hand instinctively covering the spot on my arm. “How do you know about me?”
“Oh, I know many things,” Thane said smoothly, his gaze unsettlingly direct. “Including the fact that your presence here could be the key to something much greater. Imagine—uniting the packs, bringing order to the chaos.”
“Order?” I repeated, a cold laugh slipping out before I could stop myself. “I’m not here to fulfill some prophecy or take part in your power plays. I didn’t even want to be here in the first place.”
“Whether you want it or not,” Thane said, his tone darkening, “your fate is tied to ours. And you have more power than you realize.”
I shot Ryker a look, hoping for some kind of explanation, but his jaw was clenched, his expression unreadable. “What’s he talking about, Ryker?”
“Thane’s ideas about unity are nothing more than a ploy for control,” Ryker said, his gaze fixed on Thane. “He’s trying to use you, Alethea. To make you a pawn in his little game.”
Thane raised an eyebrow, unfazed by the accusation. “Is that what you’ve been telling her? That I’m some kind of monster looking to use her?”
“It’s the truth,” Ryker said, stepping in front of me protectively. “And I won’t let you manipulate her.”
Thane’s smile returned, his gaze shifting to me with a gleam of curiosity. “Alethea, you’re free to make your own choices. You don’t have to let Ryker control what you do, what you know. He’s not exactly being honest with you, either.”
I felt a cold knot form in my stomach. I looked up at Ryker, my mind racing. “Is that true? Are you keeping things from me?”
Ryker’s expression softened, his gaze briefly meeting mine. “I’m trying to protect you.”
“You keep saying that,” I replied, frustration simmering beneath my skin. “But from where I’m standing, it feels like you’re both trying to control me, to use me for whatever it is you’re planning.”
Thane’s gaze sharpened, sensing an opportunity. “Alethea, I could offer you something different—freedom. Freedom to understand who you are, what you’re capable of. You wouldn’t be bound to any pack or alpha unless you wanted to be.”
I hesitated, his words weaving a tempting vision in my mind. A life without strings, without secrets, a chance to understand the strange mark on my arm and the dreams that haunted me.
Ryker’s voice cut through my thoughts, low and cold. “Thane doesn’t want freedom for you, Alethea. He wants power. He sees you as a tool, nothing more.”
“Do I?” Thane asked, his gaze never wavering. “Or am I simply giving her a choice—something you’ve denied her from the start?”
The two of them stood toe-to-toe, the tension between them crackling like static electricity. Part of me wanted to yell at them both, to tell them to leave me out of their twisted rivalry. But the reality was, I wasn’t out of it. I was smack in the middle, with no way to pull myself free.
I took a deep breath, gathering the courage to speak. “Maybe it’s time I started making my own choices, Ryker. If Thane has answers, I want to hear them.”
Ryker’s gaze snapped to me, a flash of hurt and anger crossing his face. “You don’t know what you’re asking for, Alethea. Thane’s promises come at a price.”
I turned to Thane, ignoring the storm brewing in Ryker’s eyes. “What is it you’re really after, Thane? What do you gain from… helping me?”
He gave a slow, calculated smile. “Let’s just say I’m interested in balance. If you choose to ally with me, I’ll ensure you have the knowledge—and power—you need to decide your own fate. No strings attached.”
I felt Ryker’s hand on my arm, his grip gentle but firm. “Alethea, please. Don’t do this. You can’t trust him.”
Thane’s gaze darkened as he looked at Ryker’s hand, his expression daring, dangerous. “Let the lady decide, Ryker.”
I looked between the two of them, my heart pounding in my chest. My whole life had been a series of decisions made for me—safe choices, predictable ones. But this was different. This was my choice, and I felt the weight of it settling heavily on my shoulders.
“Fine,” I said, feeling a rush of defiance. “Thane, tell me everything you know.”
Ryker’s expression hardened, but he said nothing, the anger in his eyes barely contained. Thane’s smile widened, a gleam of satisfaction in his gaze as he extended his hand.
“Welcome to the alliance, Alethea,” he murmured, his voice as smooth and treacherous as silk.
As I took his hand, a jolt of energy surged through me, fierce and powerful. But there was something darker beneath it, something that felt like a storm waiting to break.
And from the look on Ryker’s face, I knew I had just crossed a line I could never uncross.
