Chapter 10: Being Stymied and Made Difficult by Someone

She was fluent in the language of A Country.

Even though Helen wasn't entirely certain if Dolores was the same woman from the previous night, she was now convinced!

"Ms. White?" Helen's assistant couldn't comprehend why Helen suddenly halted in front of the HR waiting room and continued, "The meeting is about to start soon."

Helen handed the document in her hand to her assistant. "You take the document to Mr. Nelson first; I'll review it later."

"Then you can start working tomorrow." Since there were very few people who knew the language of A Country, Dolores' lack of work experience wouldn't pose a problem as long as she was proficient in the language.

Dolores stood up and offered a slight bow. "Thank you."

With joy in her heart, she happily exited the interview room. Just as she left, Helen entered.

"The woman from before doesn't meet the job requirements; we shouldn't hire her."

"Even though she lacks work experience, she knows the..."

"So it doesn't really matter what I say, does it?" Helen spoke firmly.

Helen was Matthew's secretary and girlfriend, and she had become the new lady of the Nelson family. Who would dare to offend her?

Though the interviewer felt it wasn't ideal, he reluctantly replied, "Alright."

Dolores, walking out of the towering building, was filled with elation. For the first time in a long while, she felt a glimmer of hope for her future. Her life was finally taking a turn for the better.

She hailed a cab from the WY Group and headed back to the Flores family residence.

The ride was short, and soon the cab pulled up in front of the Flores house. Dolores paid the driver and stepped out of the car, moving with light and confident strides as she entered the premises.

In the living room, Beulah sat on the sofa, dressed in a silk nightgown that accentuated her alluring figure.

Upon spotting Dolores, Beulah arched her delicate eyebrows. "Well, well, if it isn't Dolores."

Dolores glanced at the jade bracelet adorning Beulah's wrist and furrowed her brow. She had seen it in her mother's jewelry box when she was a child. Her mother had mentioned that her grandmother had given her the bracelet.

But now, it adorned Beulah's wrist instead.

Dolores composed herself. "I'm here to see Randolph Flores."

Beulah idly toyed with her impeccably manicured nails without bothering to look up at Dolores. "I'm sure life hasn't been easy for you after marrying a cripple, right?"

"That's none of your business," Dolores murmured and inquired once more, "Is Randolph here?"

Beulah raised her gaze to assess Dolores. "You look like a deflated eggplant. I suppose the cripple from the Nelson family doesn't fancy you either, does he?"

Dolores couldn't help but sneer. In that moment, she sincerely thanked Matthew for pretending to be paralyzed, as it had granted her the opportunity to return.

If Beulah knew that Matthew wasn't actually crippled, would she regret not allowing her daughter to marry him?

As a man, Matthew was undeniably handsome, capable, and wealthy. He was the type of man many women yearned for.

Since Randolph appeared to be absent, Dolores didn't wish to waste any more time with Beulah.

She turned to leave, but just as she reached the door, a car pulled into the driveway and stopped in front of the house. Dolores recognized the vehicle all too well—it belonged to Randolph.

The driver opened the car door, and Randolph stepped out. Catching sight of Dolores standing at the doorway, Randolph realized she might be seeking Jessica's dowry. His face darkened. Without waiting for her to speak, he interrupted her. "If you want to claim your mother's dowry, there's something you must do for me."

Dolores furrowed her brow. "You promised that if I married Matthew Nelson, you would return everything that rightfully belongs to us!"

Randolph let out a cold snort. "Why do you think I wanted you to marry into the Nelson family? It's because it would benefit the Flores family's social standing, especially in business!"

Anger surged through Dolores, boiling her blood and causing her body to tremble. "How can you break your promise? Are you even a man?"

"You're too trusting and foolish!" Randolph made a disdainful expression. "I'm your father. Is this how you choose to speak to me?"

Dolores felt a deep sense of disappointment and heartbreak. He had betrayed his own words.

"If you want your mother's dowry, tell Matthew to give me the development rights of Repulse Bay, and then I'll give it to you."

Without uttering another word, Randolph walked past Dolores and headed into the courtyard.

A few steps away from Dolores, he halted once more. "That piece of land is of great importance to me. Once you successfully persuade Matthew to give me the development rights, I'll return everything your mother brought into our marriage, including the piano she gave you as a birthday present."

Dolores never imagined that Randolph could be so shameless, repeatedly going back on his word. She no longer trusted him.

If she wanted to reclaim those possessions, she would have to think of another way.

Dolores narrowed her eyes. The land Randolph desired was in Matthew's hands...

If she wanted to exploit Randolph's weakness, it seemed she would have to make an effort with her "newlywed husband."

But how could she do it? Despite being legally married, their relationship felt more like that of strangers, or even worse.

Even after returning to her residence, Dolores still hadn't devised a solution. Instead, she received a phone call informing her that she didn't meet the qualifications.

"Didn't you say I could start working tomorrow when I left?" Dolores asked anxiously.

"I'm sorry, but we can't hire you. You don't meet our requirements."

Without another word, the person abruptly hung up the phone.

Dolores stared at her phone, her mind going blank for a moment.
