CHAPTER ONE ; Introduction to Doom

ADELAINE…

" Did you get the job, Adel?" Annie asks with enthusiasm as I stare faintly into space.

" What happened, Adel?" she repeated, obviously confused at my blank expression.

" Adelaine!" Dad's strict voice cut through the hundred and one thoughts running through my mind and I turned slowly.

" No, Dad, I didn't," I stated, so low that even the nearest person couldn't hear me, but somehow they both did.

Annie rushed over to me and gave me a hug

" It's not your fault, sis; maybe you'd get other ones; you applied for several jobs,, right? "

I nodded .

It wasn't my fault? If they knew what had really happened, they'd know that it was fully my fault and I was to take the blame for everything.

Excusing myself, I walked briskly to my room, shut the door, and let the tears flow freely.

My room was still a mess from my ecstasy this morning; I allowed myself to have a pity party as I let the day's event run through my head.

A few hours ago

"Finally I've been asked to come for the interview!" I knew this information had obviously reached my dad and woke him up, but I was too hyperactive to care.

" Where ?"Annie appears from the kitchen munching on some chips.

" Drum roll." I tap my fingers on the table,, expecting more anticipation from Annie.

" Can you just say it already!" She slumps on the sofa, her eyes still shining.

" The one and only Kings Heights company!" I scream once again, much to Annie's shock.

" Who even owns that big company?" I shrug. Who cared anyway? I did get to go for the interview, not concerned about having to imagine who owned the largest company in Preston.

Dad appeared from his room, smiling. Annie went over to help him sit.

" Dad I got it!" I repeat to Dad who gives me a broad smile just like I'd expected from him.

The time was 6am. Which meant I could get to the company early and be interviewed first.

" I'm so proud of you baby girl, I hope you know that "

" Awwwn, thanks, Dad, I love you. " Annie scrunches up her face at my display of affection and hisses, eliciting laughter from Dad and me.

"I'm gonna go get dressed, I need to be there early

" This part of the city belongs to me, so you better stay away from it, else I will blow your brains out"

" Such bluff, I own it and you better stay out of it"

I didn't fancy myself listening to conversations and arguments like this here in Preston, since it was a normal thing around. Everywhere was controlled by a Mafia lord. This morning was more of a heated one as two armed men tried their best to fight for dominance.

Obviously, the lawlessness in this town was evident. I wasn’t quite familiar with the surroundings as I’d schooled in a different city and Dad didn’t want us roaming around much.

I would have passed by and passed my way, yet they were in my way. I needed to cross the road to get to kings heights

The men had started a fight, and obviously, one was going to get killed, but that, once again, was a Preston daily occurrence.

" You imbecile, I told you I owned this place," the tougher of the two spoke up; lifting up his gun, he shot right through the guts of his opponent.

The blood splashed on the faces and attires of the people around and I decided to move back a bit. They each grumbled in disgust. I needed no bloodstains on my dress.

" Will you watch where you're going, you idiot!" A voice boomed behind me, making me realize I had stepped on his foot. His all-black attire complimented his mean face and his hair.

" You could have watched yours too, you idiot " I replied, eliciting a silent hush from the people around.

Didn't these people have jobs??? What was it with their interest in fights in the early morning?

" Says the gossip that couldn't even mind her business and leave a crime site "

" I presume you're not a human then because you're obviously standing here too, which makes you a gossip." I stared deep into the dark orbs of this stranger, who only gave me a blank stare in return.

His hands kept clenching and unclenching, almost as if he was uncomfortable. Not wanting to disgrace myself any further, I turned to continue my journey. I could hear him shout

" Shows over , get a life " obviously to the fellow gossips . They deserved that. Maybe he was a road safety manager. I wasn't even sure Preston had cops.

" I'm Adelaine Stewart, a 20-year-old graduate,, and I seek to find a job here......" Ugh no.

" I'm Adelaine Stewart...I'm 20.” Frustration and madness went on as I finally found myself right in front of the king's company.

I went over the possible questions in my head, and this time, I made quite good progress with it.

I paused to adjust my skirt.

“ You’re welcome, boss, it’s been long, “ I heard a porter say, not bothering to know whoever this ‘boss’ was; I finally got my desired skirt pattern and walked right through the door.

“ Good morning, I’m Adelaine Stewart, here for the interview “

“Hello miss Adelaine, the boss will have his interview on the thirtieth floor, so kindly take the elevator up there, you’d meet the other secretaries “

“ thank you “

“ you’re well…ugh, Good morning, boss.” The receptionist was also distracted by this ‘ boss.’ She even seemed to be casting flirting eyes on him.

Ignoring her, I finally took the elevator. Apparently, someone was already in, and I managed to use my foot to block it.

Lo and behold, the mean dude from earlier.

“ Didn’t know you worked here”

I decided to ignore him. I’d had enough drama for the day.

Thankfully, the ride was silent, and I figured we were going to the same floor.

So he’s also here for an interview. I mused inwardly.

The ride was beginning to get stuffy as he cast glances my way and I was glad when it finally came to an end.

There was a man behind the elevator when it opened.

“ Good morning boss, we’re pleased to have you back “

“ yes, sure, get to work “

He passed by me and before I could get over my shock he stated :

“ tell the interns to start coming to my office “

Somebody slap me

I needed some clarity, I managed to stop the guy and asked

“ Who is he?”

“ You don’t know him?” he deadpanned.

“ Ermm, no, I don’t; as a matter of fact, this is my first time seeing him,” which wasn’t a lie; I mean, I didn’t know him till today.

“ He’s Dante King, owner of Kings Heights Mafia King of the whole of Preston, “ he stated, still grumpy from his boss’ reply earlier.

So he was the Dante King, I’d heard about him but never seen him.

And I had missed my chances of working for him, with my outburst and silent treatment earlier.

I had two options.

Humiliate myself in front of my enemy or run away.

“ I SAID WHERE IS THE FIRST PERSON “

His loud voice boomed across the hall and I could even feel the building shake.

I checked my card, I was the first person.

Oh no.

I had to. I really had to.

Turning on my heels, almost as if I was being chased, I chose the stairs and descended in haste. I’d gotten myself fired even before I got interviewed.
