Chapter 1
“That sound is just a bunch of crazy fireworks! Wait, you wanna ruin my chances of becoming a hit artist? Damn Chris!” Sophia fiddled with her baggy pants for a few tickets cards of the small and shabby studio to toss it all at Chris's face.
Sophia is a great singer and a wannabe American artist who lives with her little brother, David in a small apartment downtown in Manhattan. Sophia also works as a stripper at night in a big club. It is the only way she would keep up with her bills. She would have been a hit artist by now if she didn't pass up the opportunity to accept Mrs Cole's proposal to leave for Italy, but how could she abandon David in the hospital by himself and scurry off to a better life, knowing she is all he has.
Sophia and David were abandoned as children at a nearby church by their enthusiastic parents, while Sophia was 15 and David, 10.
Sophia decided to take it up on herself to survive alone with her little brother. Ever since, they lived in the shadows.
They sneaked into restaurants to steal crumbs to eat and mostly grateful when people order and most certainly don't get to finish their food as a result of emergency; leaving the remnants to the advantage of the two siblings and after then, they would only have to worry about where to lay their heads, of which they always end up dozing off beside grocery shops and restaurants until Madam Grace, a petite snack shop owner who lives alone told them they could come live with her for a while until they're able to find their own space.
Sophia decided to work with Madam Grace and she was kind enough to give Sophia chunk allowances and gradually, that was how David could go to a local nearby school to get educated in the least.
She didn't as much think about her own education as long as David went to school, she could swear she'd be fine.
Sophia worked her ass off for her little brother until she was able to rent a small house for her and her brother. They still go to pay Madam Grace a little visit and help around whilst they can.
Sophia is now a 26 year old lady who has not been contacted by her parents after 11 years of abandonment. She couldn't be bothered anymore but she still looks at David and thinks that he would be lacking a touch of intense parenthood. But as for David, Sophia became his parent and everything all together.
Not that David was a bad boy, apparently, he turned out to be a good young man with a caring and determined heart. Sophia couldn't be happier but she always felt something was missing in their lives but she's decided that apart from their crazy parents, she would do anything to make things right. She would never let her little brother know what she does at night, Sophia would do anything to keep that little secret away from him whilst making him believe she runs night shifts in a big grocery store in town.
“Yo Soph,” Chris rubbed his face in frustration. Soph was a nickname Chris came up with after a year of acquaintance and during their sessions together.
“I'm tryna work on that shit okay? I'm sorry damn!” Chris sucked his teeth.
“Right, I knew you would apologize once again and it looks like I'd be needing a break from you, this damn sessions and this bloody wack studio!” Sophia hissed.
“It's not wack stop it.” Chris shifted uncomfortably away from a fuming Sophia and rested his back on the peeling walls of his studio.
“Oh you know it is, and damn I don't think I can make it with you on this grind like I once predicted. I think we should call it's stops here and now.” Sophia pulled out more rumpled cards and threw it all on Chris's face.
“Yo Soph, don't do that! We could still make it work.” Chris tried to talk to her but there's no pacifying a fuming Sophia.
“Did you say work?” Sophia scoffed. “After three fucking years? You still believe this could work with that stupid fireworks you call sound? I'm out!” Sophia said and turned on her heels to leave but Chris decided to appear in front of her to stop her.
“At least gimme one more chance, with your gifts and talents we could make it work Soph.” Chris almost pleaded.
“With my gifts and talents yes, but with that wacko you call a sound? Hell no! If it didn't work for 3 years Chris, I don't think it ever will and I sure as hell don't wanna make my first hit at the age of 65!” Sophia said as Chris's face fell.
“So how about I sort somewhere else then? Would you still want me to produce for you?” He said with hopeful eyes.
“I got nothing to say Chris, until then? I'm out, I got somewhere else to be.” Sophia said and scurried past Chris and then she successfully made it out of the studio to go home.
Chris stared dejectedly after her and there was also a look of determination in his eyes and then he slammed the doors and went back to his cracked and messed up sound.
It was on a Saturday. Sophia got home to see a focused David practically glued to the screens playing video game. Sophia was surprised to see those gadgets because she doesn't remember buying one for him.
Immediately David noticed Sophia come in, he instantly removed his head phone and stared awkwardly at her.
“Where did you get that?” Was Sophia's first question.
David fiddled with the remote like a child caught with a candy.
“Jayden said I could have it.” David said trying not to meet his sister's eyes.
“Jayden? Who's Jayden?” Sophia asked and dropped her purse on the nearby couch and stood like she was ready for a fight.
“A good friend from school. I wasn't expecting you back home this early, I thought you'd be back home late.” David scratched his.
“So what? So this is what you do behind my back and when I'm not around, you take video games from your friends and you sit your ass down and enjoy yourself while I bust my ass to see you go to school…” Sophia pinched her nose with her eyes closed. It's something she does whenever she's worked up.
“Sis no, that's not..”
“Shut it!” She scoffed. “And what about college? Don't you want to go to school and become somebody? Oh you think those MFS you call friends are doing you a favor?”
“He didn't lend it to me, he said I could have it.” David protested.
“And what does he want in return? Because those rich dudes always and I mean want something in return, so tell me, what does he want, your loyalty? To slave you away?”
