Chapter 4 Alisa Gets Fired

When Aldrich released Maggie's hand, allowing her to regain her balance, she couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment.

Aldrich remained silent. Instead, he fixed his gaze on Maggie's face. What kind of person was she that his silver wolf compelled him to protect her? But he was certain she wasn't a werewolf; she was merely a human.

"Be more careful next time; this is your wallet," Aldrich said expressionlessly, adjusting his suit and heading briskly towards a waiting car in the distance.

"Thank you, but what's your name?" Maggie suddenly snapped back to reality, shouting loudly.

However, Aldrich didn't even turn around, disappearing into his elongated Rolls-Royce.

Maggie stood still, watching Aldrich's retreating figure. The undeniable charm radiating from his silhouette deeply intrigued her, and she reminisced about their two encounters—the sharpness of his gaze, the subtle kindness when he rescued her.

Shaking off her thoughts, Maggie took a deep breath and refocused on her own troubles. She decided to try and communicate with the bank since they usually offered options for deferred payments and interest rate reductions, right?

To her surprise, Maggie's requests for extended repayment and reduced interest were denied by the bank, citing that she had exceeded the allowable number of applications!

It was Max again!

Maggie was overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness.

Max had deceived her for so long, concealing so many things, and she hadn't noticed a thing. She had put too much trust in Max, entrusting all her banking affairs to him. She had made a colossal mistake!

Clutching her phone tightly, Maggie paced nervously around her apartment, her fingers trembling as she dialed one number after another.

With no other choice, she turned to friends for help. Unfortunately, each call ended with disappointment or empty promises. Her once-reliable support system of friends seemed unwilling or unable to lend a hand when she needed it the most.

When she dialed Alisa's number, Alisa's voice on the other end provided comforting words, but even she couldn't offer a solution to Maggie's dilemma.

"I'm so sorry, Maggie," Alisa's voice came through the phone. "The hospital said I made a grave mistake, and I lost an important sperm sample. The blame has fallen on me, and I may face termination. It's a tough situation, but we'll get through it together."

Maggie's heart sank, and she was shocked. After a moment, guilt overwhelmed her. She knew that Alisa had been highly stressed about her pregnancy, which was why she had been so on edge recently. Work errors were likely the result of this stress. Maggie couldn't help but feel responsible for potentially causing Alisa to lose her job. She needed to find a way to make amends.

"Alisa," Maggie whispered. "Please tell me what I can do to help you. I can't stand to see you suffer."

"Maggie, this isn't your fault. You don't need to shoulder the blame," Alisa said with a bitter smile. "And no one can help me. The dean has confirmed that I lost Aldrich's sperm sample. I don't know what happened, but in the face of these accusations, I can't defend myself."

Aldrich? So, the key figure is Aldrich.

After ending the call, Maggie stared at her reflection in the mirror. As orphans, she and her sister, Alisa, had endured a cruel childhood within the walls of the orphanage. The strong preyed upon the weak, and those demons subjected them to constant bullying and torment. When Maggie was eleven, they mustered the courage to escape the orphanage.

However, life outside had proven to be equally unfriendly. In their youth, they struggled to find work, enduring the hardships of homelessness, finding solace only in each other's unwavering support.

Eventually, a compassionate wealthy couple extended their helping hand, adopting the sisters and providing them with a stable and happy life. But their newfound sanctuary concealed demons of its own. On a fateful night, the couple's son, fueled by alcohol and unforgivable malice, intruded into Maggie's room. In the end, Alisa rescued Maggie from the abuser's clutches, seeking a fresh start in a new city, determined to create her own life.

Alisa was fortunate and realized her childhood dream of becoming a doctor through scholarships and student loans established by charitable organizations.

Now, through an unintentional mistake, she was on the verge of losing it all.

Maggie had to help Alisa. But how could she do it?

At that moment, the TV was broadcasting news: a company CEO had donated a large sum of money to the local welfare center.

Wow, he seemed really kind.

Wait a minute, that CEO looked like the man who had saved her twice. Yes, it was him!

Maggie became anxious and grabbed the remote control, turning up the volume, listening intently.

His name was... Aldrich! It was Aldrich!

Heaven, what a coincidence!

Maggie's heart surged with a series of emotions—astonishment, gratitude, and a hint of worry all intermingled. She couldn't ignore the irresistible charm exuding from Aldrich's unique features and captivating smile on the television screen. It was as though his mere existence emitted an irresistible allure, tugging at her emotions.

As Maggie searched for information about Aldrich Barrett on her phone, her hands trembled violently. The image gradually cleared, and Maggie's heart raced with anxiety. Finally, the pictures loaded, and it was him! He was the kind stranger who had saved her twice in moments of danger!

He was a perfect man—handsome, generous, and altruistic.

Unexpected connections ignited a flame in her heart.

A glimmer of hope sprang forth within her.

"I will find Aldrich and protect Alisa," she vowed to herself, her voice brimming with determination.
