Chapter 1
I had loved him for eight years and been married for two years, but now I had decided to divorce him. Boris Dowd was so outstanding that people often joked if I had saved Boris's life in the past life, allowing me to marry him in this life. A faint smile played on my lips, as if I had said something and yet said nothing at all.
There could have been many reasons, but what really prompted me to think about divorce was that weekend when he was called back to the office to work overtime. I waited for him to finish work at the coffee shop below Boris's company building. He had said he would be done by midnight. Thinking that I would be bored alone at home, I decided to head there at eleven-thirty to wait for him.
I lit up my phone screen, and "12:30" glared back at me. Clutching my aching stomach, I frowned.
"Haven't you finished yet?"
"I'm going to starve myself."
I scrolled through WhatsApp, but messages I had sent him today remained unanswered.
Looking up, I suddenly saw Boris's colleague, Jonathan. He was heading to the cashier with a few other colleagues I wasn't very familiar with. I hurried over. "Jonathan, why isn't Boris coming down with you?" Jonathan looked surprised to see me. "Claire, what brings you here today?" I pulled a smile, pointing at their company building. "Boris had to work overtime, and I was too bored at home by myself, so I decided to come and pick him up. You guys must have had a long day, right?"
Jonathan looked around and nodded. "Indeed." "Has Boris not finished yet? I've been waiting downstairs for a long time, and he hasn't come down." Jonathan seemed hesitant and spoke cautiously, "I guess so?" Seeing that he couldn't give a clear answer, a vague sense of unease rose within me. "Alright, you guys go ahead. I'll go up and find him myself!" I turned, picked up my stuff from the table, and left the coffee shop. As I was leaving, I faintly heard their conversation. "Is that Boris's wife?" Jonathan replied in a low voice, "Yeah." The other person whispered, "She has an unremarkable appearance. How did Boris Dowd end up with her?" "Not sure, but they seem pretty loving. I heard they've been together since college," Jonathan responded.
